As one of the countries with the riches, diversity of nature and extraordinary culture, Indonesia deserved to be said as 'mega-biodiversity' country. Indonesia consists of 42 land and 5 specific ecosystems, also has an 81,000 kilometres coastline. The area of mangrove ecosystems in Indonesia covers around 22% of the total area of mangrove in the world. In terms of diversity of Zoology, Indonesia has 17 % of all species in the world, 12 % of mammals, 15 % of amphibies and reptiles, 17 % of birds and 37 % of fishes (The Nature Conservacy, 2005).

 

On the other hand, Indonesia is a developing country that is undertaking the development in various areas of life to make the function of the environment long-lasting that supporting sustainable development for the community's sake. The effort and development activities undertaken will change the condition of the environment that will impact on the community and their environment. One of the challenges to be faced to achieve sustainable development is how to repair the contaminated environment without sacrificing the needs of economic development and social justice.
