Water Resources Development


Indonesia has more than 5,000 rivers and about 600

of them are potential for flooding. Flood prone areas

that are affected by those parent rivers have reached

1.4 million hectares. The series of floods in a

relatively short period of time and always repeated

every year demanding greater efforts in order

to anticipate to minimize the loss.


With the very large potential of those rivers, the

water availability in Indonesia mainland per capita

per year is actually quite large, that is 15,500 m3. At

first glance, it looks very large amount, however,

water availability is not the same in each region, and

its existence is strongly influenced by season.


One cause of the uneven availability of water is

that because of not evenly distributed rainfall

throughout the year, with the trend of the number of

rainy days in a year of diminishing and

condition Catchment Area that have been degraded.

This will cause the fluctuation in maximum

and minimum discharge become larger, if we do not

pay attention properly it will cause the decrease of

water availability.


In managing and studying natural phenomenon

that occurs nowadays as mentioned above, in terms

of flood or drought and other disasters caused by

water, becoming a compulsion to always review

things as follows:

  1. Water resources,
  2. Quantity and quality of water
  3. Catchment Area Conservation,
  4. Control of flood and drought,
  5. Water resources infrastructure,
  6. Pattern and plan for integrating water resources management,
  7. Local Government Policy relating to Regional Autonomy,
  8. The example of Water Resources Management is to be able to put water in a timely manner, a decent amount and the right place (right time, right amount, right place).

In facilitating the above condition and maintaining

water availability punctually, accurately and precisely, we

need to do some formulations, those are:

  1. Water Resources conservation efforts, such as application of conservation  technology and potential optimization of surface water and groundwater, adaptation and mitigation of global climate change, environmental carrying capacity study, application of the main water structure revitalization (in this application, included the evaluation of dam safety) and the application of water quality recycle

  2. The efforts of Water Resources utilization :

    • Water-saving irrigation, which minimizes the loss of water in the channel and the delivery precision of irrigation water.
    • Developing software application to analyze water potential and water allocation.Water Resources

  3. The efforts to control water destruction :

    • Model Development of Flood Control in Catchment Area and Urban Flood.
    • Early Warning System for flood, drought, landslide and debris flow (surface run off carrying fine particles, for example the flood of lava).
    • Control technology of water pollution.
